Workshop Details

Castle Park is a private resort community on Michigan’s “west coast” along Lake Michigan in Holland, MI.    Those who have not been there will be surprised to see sandy beaches and huge dunes. Along with the lakefront, there are plenty of other great subjects to paint: forests, fields, lakes, quaint villages, and fabulous flowers.   And each and every night there’s a spectacular sunset!

Contact Sally Kelly for advice on accomodations at Castle Park or nearby Saugatuck.  salkelly@earthlink.net.  Make reservations EARLY!  This is a very popular summer resort area.

If you choose to stay extra days, there’s plenty to do:  shopping and dining, art galleries, boating, tennis, and golf or just lounging on the beach.
And yes, you CAN go in the water: it’s like the ocean without the salt or the crabs!  Some call it chilly, but the locals call it refreshing.

To get a feel for the location visit the Saugatuck and Holland sites:

Closest airport is in Grand Rapids (40 min. away) but you may also fly into Chicago (about 3+ hours away)and see the city on either end of your trip.

This workshop consists of five painting days with 30 hours of instruction. Open for beginners to advanced, instruction will be in oil, watercolor & acrylic painting with pen & ink sketching.  Participants may work in any media with technique demonstrations and discussions daily. Emphasis will be on drawing, composition, color mixing, plein-air techniques with individual critiques several times during the workshop.  We’ll also have a group critique the last day.

I begin each day with a demonstration and a short talk about the emphasis for that day.

Instruction will also include photographic techniques including using digital cameras for use as an aid and reference in painting.

We’ll have a get-acquainted cocktail party the evening before the workshop begins.

Purchase only the best quality affordable in paints and brushes.

Palette knife (for mixing and cleaning palette), 2 clip-on palette cups and 2 tuna or cat food cans.

Odorless mineral spirits or Turpenoid (Blue can)

Paper towels and a few small plastic grocery bags for debris.

Bring a plastic bottle with a tight screw lid, such as an empty peanut butter jar for carrying dirty mineral spirits.

For easels, if you have a French easel, that is best; but a small paint box with an aluminum folding easel is good.

The Masterson Palette Seal Box 12x16 or 9x12 works well for plein-aire.

I would also like for the oil painters to have a small watercolor set for sketching.

We’ll spend some time developing quick travel sketching techniques. Bring several fine, roller point pens and a sketch pad with several watercolor brushes.

Bring a canvas bag such as a “boat bag” or a back pack to carry supplies. A folding stool or light chair is important. (Be sure it is something you can carry, we won’t always be close to our cars.

Naturally, insect repellent, sun-hats, sun block, painting clothes, camera and film!
